Life in a big city has become complicated with growing human activities in urban areas. Cities are being revamped by huge industrial and commercial developments. This is why people from the countryside are shifting to cities for better and more accessible facilities like education, health, and business growth.

More people means more vehicles on the roads. More economic growth means more cars on the roads.

Globalization has created more careers oriented jobs in every field and every industry. This made more people get more money. It resulted in a large number of private traffic vehicles like motorbikes and cars. All these created problems of traffic in the cities.

Reasons for traffic problems in a big city

There are many reasons directly contributing to the traffic problems in cities. Here is a list of common reasons for traffic problems in big cities:

1. Increasing Population

As the population grows naturally, more people will be on the roads and there will be traffic jams and accidents. The population of cities is increasing rapidly both by natural human growth and by the shift of the huge number of people from rural areas.
Traffic is only one of the side effects of growth. - Roy Barnes

2. Increase in standards of living

As the money keeps coming into the hands of the people, they buy their own vehicles. Thus more and more cars and motorbikes are coming out on the roads.

So, when economic activities boost up and people get more money, there is an increase in traffic on the roads which causes traffic jams and accidents.

3. Unplanned housing schemes and societies

There are a large number of housing schemes and societies are in the list of Illegal status of Urban development authorities like LDA, KDA, MDA, IDA, etc. The number of unapproved societies is the same. So, the roads are kept narrow.
Stuck in traffic is not an excuse. It's a sign of bad planning. - S.E Philips
There is no space for local commercial areas, parks, hospitals, and colleges. That is why a large number of people travel to business hubs of the cities on daily basis. It causes traffic jams and accidents.

4. Reckless drivers

Many people drive carefully and wisely. But there are many who won't care. They just get into the traffic where they find any space. They cannot wait for a minute. They are another big cause of traffic jams and accidents.
Your few minutes of patience can save hours of traffic jam! - Honeya

Effects on the life of people

Many people fall victim to accidents and reach hospitals. So the pressure is built on hospitals even though they are already busy treating diseased people. Many people are crippled for the rest of life due to deadly accidents.

Traffic jams create tension, anxiety, anger, and other psychological problem in people. Many people bear financial loss by not reaching on time. Students and job holders are late due to traffic jams.
Some of us would take our time, if we knew that we are rushing to our deaths. - Mokokoma Mokhonoana
A large number of vehicles on the roads produce air pollution which further causes diseases like cancer, asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory and heart diseases.

Solutions and suggestions

There are many ways through which we can minimize traffic, traffic jams, and accidents. Here are a few solutions to the traffic problems in a big city.

1. Minimize the migration from rural to urban areas

You cannot force anyone to stay in a village if they can afford to live in a city. People come to cities for better education and health facilities.

If govt provides good colleges, schools, universities, and hospitals in rural areas, people may not tend to shift to cities. The village may be provided with all modern facilities.

2. Improving Public traffic

If Govt provide the latest public buses and other vehicles at cheap fares, people may not purchase their own private vehicles.

If public transport reaches to every corner of the city with speed and ease, people will prefer public transport and there will be less number of vehicles on the roads.
If you provide good alternatives for public transport, you won't have traffic problems
Less number of vehicles on the roads also means less production of air pollution.

3. Imposing the traffic laws in a good sense

We have poor traffic rules enforcement. We should not spare anyone who breaks the traffic rules. The people will become careful and the accidents will be avoided.

Conclusion

Traffic is a big problem in cities. There are many factors contributing to this problem. It has an adverse effect on the life of the people. We can minimize this problem by taking various measures.
