I was searching for a nice story on the moral lesson "something is better than nothing" but it is sad to find that story nowhere on the internet. Although there are some stories those are totally irrelevant of the topic. So, I decided to write my own story on this moral lesson.

Anyhow, the main point is the stories I found on the web did not relate to the topic 'something is better than nothing'. Actually, a complete whole essay can be written on this topic but I need a story. So, I have tried my best to keep it relevant. see this below and give your remarks in the comments.

Something is better than nothing story

One Day, Dr. Aslam was returning back to his home from his clinic. It was 11 Oçlock at night. There was utter darkness in the way and he was driving his car slowly as the road was broken and muddy. Dr. Aslam was a famous doctor in the area and his hospital was equally popular. He lived in a small village 20 km away from the town where he ran his hospital. He usually came back home late at night.

Suddenly he saw huge stones in the way. He could not pass his car. He stopped his car and came down to see the situation. As he left the car, two armed men appeared from the darkness and spread their guns over him. They asked him to give them all that he had. The Dr. had a huge amount of money that he was bringing home. The money was in his car. There were some thousands of rupees in his coat's pockets too. The men went to his car to search for the money. Meanwhile, Dr. Aslam dropped the money he had in his pockets nearby in the dark. The robbers searched the car, took his money and his mobile phone while keeping him on gunpoint. They then searched the doctor's pocket and found nothing from them. They disappeared in the darkness.

Dr. Aslam had lost almost two lakh rupees. Then he lit up his car's lights and looked for the money he had dropped nearby. He found it and counted it. It was 25 thousand rupees which he saved with cleverness. Dr. drove to the house. He reacher home and told every detail of the incident to his family. If he had not dropped that money he would have lost that too. That money helped the daughter buy milk and food for his children that day. Something is better than nothing.

The story of a boy who always told lies

There lived a boy in a village. He had a bad habit of telling lies. He always lied to others and made fun of them. He used to take his sheep to the nearby forest for grazing. He daily went to the forest with his flock of sheep to graze.

One day, as he was grazing his sheep, he had a plan in his mind. He planned to fool the people of the village. He cried loudly, "the lion! , the lion! please help!" He cried again and again in a loud voice. The villagers heard the boy crying for help. They ran to him with guns, axes, swords, and hammers to counter the lion and save the boy. 

When they reached there, the boy look at them and laughed. He said, "you are poor innocent people. I was just kidding. There is no lion here." He began to laugh aloud. The villagers were angry. They went back.

A few days later, the boy did the same. Again the villagers came to help him but there was no lion. They went back cursing the boy. 

Three or four days later, a real lion came there. The boy was much afraid. He started crying for help. He shouted to the villagers, "help! help! there is a real lion here. I swear I do not lie this time" But the villagers thought that the boy might be kidding and joking with them. They heard him crying for help but they remain busy with their chores.

The boy saved his life by climbing a tree. The lion killed many sheep of the boy. When the lion went away. the boy got down from the tree and went to the village. He complained to the villagers about their careless behavior. They all told him that his lies caused his damage. 

The boy was ashamed of his own acts. He promised the villagers and himself that he will never tell a lie.

The Fox and the Goat full story

Once, a fox was feeling thirsty. He was wandering in search of water. He reached a well and looked into it. There was some water at the bottom of the well. The fox tried to reach the water but could not do so.

In another attempt to reach the water, he slipped and fell into the well. The well was too deep for Him to come out. He was in trouble. He tried hard but could not come out.

A goat happened to pass that way. He was thirsty too. He passed by the well and looked into it. He was the fox there. He asked the fox how he reached there. The fox said, "I came here to drink water. It is very pleasant down here. I am enjoying the cool water. I am swimming here. Come on. Let us have a bath together."

Instead of taking careful examination of the situation. The goat at once jumped into the well. She did not care to analyze the depth of the well and the condition of the fox. The fox was cunning and wicked. he jumped on the back of the goat and then jumped out. He was out of the well. 

The goat asked him why he jumped out. He said, "You are too simple to understand. I was unable to come out of the well without support. God sent a foolish goat as my support. Now I am leaving to enjoy life.

The fox went away leaving the goat in the well. The goat now realized his folly. There was no use of crying over spilled milk.

Here is a story of some pigeons who were struck in the delirium of death and created a way out of their will.

Once there lived a mouse in a forest. It used to find eatables in nearby fields. Some pigeons also used to land on those fields to find feed. The mouse and the pigeons became friends.

One day the pigeons were flying over a field. They saw some grains on the land below. They decided to land there to pick the grains. There was an old and wise pigeon among them. He said, "It seems that these grains have been spread by a bird catcher. I think we should not take the risk." 

The pigeons were hungry. They would not listen to the advice of the wise pigeon. They all landed there and started picking the grains.

Suddenly they were caught in a net. They were now helpless. They began to flutter but all in vain. They saw the bird catcher coming towards them at a distance. The wise pigeon was also among them. He said, "Listen carefully! We can do nothing except do one thing. Let us all fly together with our full force. It may pull the net out and we may fly with this net." 

The pigeons liked the idea. They all flew together with full force. Due to forceful pull, the net was pulled away and the birds flew away.

The bird-catcher was taken aback by the act of the birds but could do nothing. They landed near the hole of their friend mouse. It came out and cut the ropes with its sharp teeth. Soon, all the birds were free. They thanked their friend mouse.

On a hot summer day, a crow felt very thirsty. He was in search of water. He flew here and there but could find no water. He was much worried. At last, he reached a garden. He looked around and found a pitcher of water under a tree. He at once happed towards it. He peeped into the pitcher. There was a little water in it at its bottom. He tried to drink the water but was disappointed to find the water too low.

He tried to break the pot with its beak but could not do so. He tried to go as deep into the pitcher as he could but its beak could no touch the level of the water. Then he tried to overturn the pitcher but it was too much for his strength. The crow was a clever and optimist. He began to think new devices. He saw a heap of pebbles nearby. He hit upon a plan.

He picked up a stone and dropped into the pitcher. He dropped some more stones one by one.  The water rose a little. Then he dropped more stones till the water level rose so high he could drink it. Thus he quenched his thirst and flew away.

As soon as he came back, the other two friends killed him. Then they ate the food with peace and delight. After eating the poisoned food, they met their maker. The gold was still there. It was of no use to them.

Once a king had a slave. The king was cruel and unjust. He was selfish and strict. His slave did not like him due to his cruel behaviour with him. The king used to give him heavy punishment for slight mistakes. He gave little to him to eat. The slave had a miserable life. 

One day, he decided to run away. In the morning, he ran away to the forest and hid in a cave. He was sure that the king's soldiers were searching for him everywhere.

Sitting in the cave, he was thinking of his fate when he heard s growl behind him. An idea hit his mind. A lion was sitting behind him. He drenched with sweat in fear. He could not move. The lion growled again. The slave realized a pain in the voice of the lion. 

He turned back and looked at the lion. He saw that the lion has a thorn in its paw. The lion was looking at him with strange eyes. The slave took courage and went near the lion. The lion did not change its expression. Slowly, the slave moved near and pulled the thorn out of his paw. The lion roared and the slave was about to run. 

Suddenly, the lion stood up and went out of the cave without hurting the slave. The lion turned on the opening of the cave and looked at the slave with thankful eyes and went away.

After a few days, the soldiers of the king captured the slave and brought him back to the king. The king was furious in anger. He wanted to punish the slave for his disobedience. He ordered his guards to put the slave before a hungry lion. 

As they threw the slave before the lion, the lion rushed at him. But as it came near, it moved its tail and began to lick the hands of the slave. The slave also recognized the lion. It was the same lion he met in the forest.

The king was puzzled. He asked the slave the reason for the strange behavior of the lion with him. The slave told the king the whole story. The king realized that an animal can be a friend through kindness. He understood the power of kindness. 

He realized that he could win the people with kindness. He set the lion and the slave free. He became kind and hence a darling king in the eyes of his people.

Kamran and Akram lived in a village. They were fast friends. They were poor and had nothing to do to get money. They were jobless. They decided to go to the city in search of a job. On a fine day, they started their journey in the morning. They promised to help each other in bad times.

Their way lay through the forest. While they were passing through the forest, they saw a bear coming towards them. They were afraid and puzzled. They were unable to think a way to cheat and safeguard them from the bear. Kamran knew how to climb a tree. He wanted to save his life. He did not think of the safety of his friend and ran up a tree. His friend was alone at the mercy of the bear.

The other friend did not know how to climb a tree. He hit upon a clever plan. He had heard that the bear does not harm the dead. He lay down on the ground and held his breath. The bear came near and sniffed him all over. The bear was convinced that he was dead. It left him and went away.

Kamran got down from the tree and asked his friend, “What did the bear say in your ear?” Akram replied, “The bear advised me not to trust a selfish friend." He left Kamran there and went away in a separate way. Kamran had realized his mistake.

Once upon a time, a merchant earned a large sum of money by selling his goods. He had to go a long way to reach home. He went to an inn to get his horse.

The stablemen brought out his horse and said, “Sir, your horse has lost a shoe nail. You better wait and have it put in.” The merchant said, “Sorry! I have no time now. Moreover, one nail more or less in the shoe does not matter much.” Saying so, he got on his horse and galloped it towards his destination.

After some time, another nail from the shoe of the horse came off. The horse began to limp. Being in a hurry, the merchant did not stop to repair the damage. After some time, the horse began to stagger. Very soon darkness of the night prevailed everywhere. This further decreased the speed of the horse.

The darkness was falling. He was getting late. At last, he got down and led the horse. In the meantime, a gang of robbers appeared from the forest. The merchant could not speed up his horse and save his money. He was at the mercy of the looters.

They thrashed him thoroughly and snatched his money. The merchant returned home with a lame horse and empty pocket. His carelessness had cost a heavy price.

Once there was a time a camel and a jackal became fast friends. They used to wander together on the bank of the river. They helped each other in finding food. 

One day, there was a shortage of food in their area. The camel suggested going to the other side of the river in search of food. The jackal agreed. The river was deep and wide. The jackal did not know how to swim. The camel asked him to get onto his back and they would cross the river.

Wading through the deep water, the camel reached the other bank. There was a melon field on that bank of the river. Both friends entered the field and began to eat melons with delight. 

The jackal was soon filled. He began to howl. The camel asked to stop this but the jackal told that howling after the hearty meal was his habit. Despite the request of the camel, the jackal did not stop howling.

The owner of the melons reached and thrashed the camel with a heavy bushy stick. The camel was hurt. They started their journey back to the other bank of the river. The jackal was enjoying his ride on the camel. 

When the camel reached in the middle of the river, he dived into the water. The jackal began to shout. He requested the camel no to do so. But the camel told that bathing after the hearty meal was his habit. The camel dived deep and the jackal drowned into the river.

The Bat and the Animals and the Birds

Once upon a time birds and animals gathered in a forest to choose their king. The birds wanted to make a ruler out of them, while the animals insisted that an animal should be the king. They discussed the matter for several days but could not reach any conclusion. At last, they began to fight.

The bat played a strange role in the war between the birds and the animals. If the birds seemed to be winning, it would go over to their side and say, “I am with you with my heart and soul. I am a bird because I fly like you.” However if the animals seemed to be winning, the bat would take no time in changing side. It would switch on its loyalty to animals and say, “I am with you. I am an animal because I give milk to my young ones like you.” This behavior of the bat cast a slur on its face. At last, the war came to an end the animals carried the day.


The lion was made the king of the forest. The bat went to congratulate the victor. Anyway, the animals turned it out of the court saying, “You are not an animal because you fly.” It then flew over to the camp of the birds. 

They also turned it out saying, “you are not a bird because you give milk to your young ones.” Since that time, the bat has become a symbol of duplicity. It does show its face neither to animals nor to birds. It comes out only in the dark.

This is a short story of an old woman and her son. The story bears a moral lesson 'Nip the Evil in the Bud'. This is an interesting story. This story is included in my series of short stories with moral lessons for First Year students and the 9th class.

Many years ago, there was a poor old woman. She had an only son who was very dear to her. She would never rebuke him even if he did evil things. She loved him too much to scold him for his wrongs.

One day her son came with a toy he had stolen from the school. Instead of advising him and discouraging him, the woman smiled and ignored his wrong act. This type of response from his mother encouraged the boy and he began to steal things from school. Every day, he came with a new thing stolen from school and his mother said nothing.

As he grew up, he started stealing things from neighbouring houses.

As a result, he grew up a notorious thief. He would not care even for human lives that came his way. At last, he committed a murder and was caught by the police. He was sentenced to death.

His last wish before death was to see his mother. When they brought her, she tried to embrace him. As soon as she did so, he bit off her ear and the old woman began screaming. Everyone present cursed him for his mad act. But they were soon satisfied when they heard the story from the prisoner.
 
He told them that it was she who was the cause of his death. She had not taught him the difference between right and wrong. Had she been good enough to discourage him from stealing petty things from school he would not have been hanged today.

One day a bee was drinking at a stream. Suddenly she slipped and fell into the water. Despite the hard struggle, she could not manage to come out of the water. She was now at the mercy of the waves. She became helpless and quitted the struggle. 

 A dove was sitting on a nearby tree watching the whole scene. She thought of helping the bee. She broke a leaf from the tree and dropped it near the bee. The bee got on the leaf. Now her life was safe. She took rest on the leaf and dried her wings. Then she mustered up the power and took a flight to her hive. The bee was thankful for the kindness of the dove.

After some days a hunter came into the forest and he saw the same dove sitting on a tree. He aimed at her with his gun. The dove was unaware of the hunter. 

Just as he was ready to fire, an insect stung his hand and his aim was missed. Hearing the sound of fire, the dove flew away. The insect was the same bee that was saved by the dove. The bee had played her part in saving the life of the dove.

A Hunter and His Faithful Dog

A hunter had a very faithful dog. The dog had a special attachment to the hunter. He had saved him from wild animals many times. One day, the hunter’s wife was not at home and he had to go out for hunting leaving his five years old son alone at home in the watch of the dog. His son was too young for the hunter to take him along to the hunting.

During his absence, a wolf entered the house and made its way to the baby’s room. He was to kill the baby when the dog sprang upon him and they both had a hard fight. In the long run, the dog killed the beast and saved the baby from any harm.

When the hunter returned in the evening, the dog met him at the door. He saw dog’s snout red with blood. As usual, the dog started licking his feet. The hunter entered the house and saw more smudges of blood in the yard. He thought the dog had killed the child. He flew into a rage, picked his gun and shot the dog dead.

On entering the baby’s room, he found his child safe and sound. A dead wolf was lying by his side. The man realized his mistake. He felt very sorry for what he had done but it was no use crying over spilled milk.

Once upon a time, a farmer lived in a village. He had four sons. They were quarrelsome and did not live with peace. Their hatred for each other irritated the farmer. He advised them to live in peace but in vain. He thought of a plan.

He sent for his sons. When they came, he asked them to bring a bundle of sticks. They brought the bundle and tied them tight with a sturdy rope. The farmer asked his eldest son to break the bundle. He tried his best but could not break the bundle. Then the farmers one by one asked his sons to break the bundle. No one could break the bundle.

The farmer asked them to untie the sticks. Now he gave one stick to every son and asked them to break the sticks. They easily broke the sticks. 

The farmer said, “Now see the power of unity. This is how unity makes you strong. The tied sticks were powerful because they were united in one single bundle. None of you could break them. 

Now when they are separated, you have easily broken them. Similarly, if you live with the union, nobody can harm you. If you will live an individual life, every one of you is easy to be destroyed. So the strength lies in unity.”

This advice has a great influence on his sons and they started living in peace.

Moral Lesson: Union is Strength. United we stand, divided we fall.

Once there lived a wood-cutter in a village. He was very poor. He used to cut the trees in the nearby forest to sell the wood in the market. 

One day, he was cutting a tree just on the bank of a river. By chance, his axe slipped and fell into the river. He was helpless. His axe was the only source of earning for him. He started crying bitterly.

The angel of mercy appeared before him. He asked the woodcutter why he was crying. The woodcutter told him the whole matter. 

The angel took pity on him. He dived into the river and came up with a golden axe. He asked the woodcutter if that was his axe. The woodcutter told that that was not his axe.

The angel dived into the water again and appeared with a silver axe. The woodcutter again refused to take that axe as that was not his. The angel dived the third time and brought the iron axe. The woodcutter was overjoyed to see his own axe. He accepted that at once.

The angel was greatly impressed by his honesty. He gave him the other three axes as a reward for his honesty.

Moral Lesson: Honesty is the best policy
