Explanation of stanza 1

In these lines, the poet has sketched scenes of a sparrow's home. He says that the mother sparrow has come to the nest with a small millet in her beak. She had been searching for food for her young baby birds. finally, she was able to find a grain and has come back to the nest to feed her babies.

The baby birds are very small. They have no feathers yet. When they open their beaks wide, only beaks are seen. There are ten baby birds in the nest. The mother has only one grain of millet to be fed to these ten babies.

The war against hunger is truly mankind’s war of liberation. - John F. Kennedy

Explanation of stanza 2

To whom the mother -------  you should solace

In these lines, the poet has described the confusion of the mother sparrow. She has only one piece of grain in her beak. There are ten young ones in the nest. All are hungry. They all are crying for food opening their beaks wide.

They have joined the beaks wide opened. Everyone hopes to get the food. The mother sparrow is thinking which baby she should feed first. Which baby birds she should comfort and which should be left hungry till the next supply of food.

The poet has illustrated the love of a mother for her babies. Nature has put a lot of love for babies in a mother's heart. She loves all her children regardless of any difference.

A mother's love endures to all - Washington Irving

Explanation of Stanza 3

Fissuring the atom ----- the ten young ones

In these lines, the poet laments the so-called progress of human beings. Humans are able to break the nuclei of the atom. They have made atomic weapons to destroy themselves. The poet says that by fissuring the atom, you have made the things that will make you cry. These atomic weapons will still be a horrible thing.

The weapons of war must be abolished before they abolish us - J.F Kennedy

On the other side, breaking the grains of millet can set life on foot. The poet wants to draw our attention to the positive use of science and technology. It can save many lives and eliminate hunger from the world.

The poet asks a question at the end of the poem. He asks Humans if they can break the grain like they did with the atom. He says that real science is to serve humanity- not to destroy humanity - with it. As there are a lot of people to be fed on a small amount of food.

Hunger knows no friends but its feeder - Aristotle

He again emphasizes the analogy of the mother sparrow who has to feed her ten young ones with a small millet.
