Introduction

This poem is written by an American poet Douglas Malloch. As the title refers, this poem is a piece of advice for everyone, particularly the young people. 

This piece of advice is really helpful in practical life. Until now, this principle has guided all the successful people and enhanced their mental abilities which led to their success. 

The poet took many natural objects as examples to promote the central idea of this poem.

Moreover, he asserted that nobody of us is created purposelessly. However, our purpose is hidden somewhere in this world. 

Life is the quest of finding our purpose, excelling in it and achieving success. The poem has a pluralistic view about life because it talks about the multiplicity of possibilities in life. It contains twenty-eight verses.

Summary of the Poem 

The poem begins by indirectly referring to the meaning of life. Meaning of life is the purpose to shape ourselves and to live life. 

In this respect, the poet puts some of the possibilities before the reader. He says that if your circumstances are not favorable for becoming a pine on the top of the hell, it is not the end of life. You still have the option of becoming a little scrub in the valley. 

The poet here makes the actual point of the poem: be the best little scrub. He is implying that it does not matter what you become, what matters is how best you have shaped yourself. 

By talking using the examples of 'pine' and 'scrub', the poet has said something more: the value of your existence is not measured by your size but by your excellence. 

Again, the poet suggests the same point in the way that if you cannot be a tree (which is usually tall), be a bit of the grass. Tree and grass are largely different in sizes. But the poet is again talking about becoming excellent whether in the form of a tree or a bit of the grass. 

Then the poet talks of the two fishes: muskie and bass. He says that if you cannot become a muskie, be a bass but you should be the liveliest bass in the lake. 

The poet says that all of us cannot be the captains; some have to be the crew. Here he is saying that we must do the tasks that are suitable for us. He repeats the point by giving examples of train and train and sun and star. In the end, he says, 
"It isn't by size that you win or you fail."

A Bird Came Down the Walk is the creation of Emily Dickinson, an American poet. The Bird Came Down the Walk, like many of Dickinson's poems, explores nature in a detailed and intimate manner. 

The poet says that a bird landed on the ground in front of her. The bird did not know that the poetess had seen him. The bird broke an earthworm in half and ate it raw. 

Then it drank some drops of dew from the leaves of the grass. It hopped to the side to let a beetle pass. He looked rapidly all around. His eyes looked like scared beads. He shook his soft head around.

The poet offered him a crumb, but the bird flew away. The bird's wings moved through the air more softly than the oars in the ocean water. The poet has also compared the softness of a bird's flight with that of a butterfly who don't make a splash.

She humorously says I will repeat all these things. Then she says when my kids are on phone, I will snap my fingers in sugar or bleach and will hide under the bed. By doing so, I will avoid being caught by them.

I will do mischievous acts on the dining table and make my kids angry. In the TV lounge, I will throw my socks in the air and play with channels. 

At the end of the poem, she says that I will lay in bed at night and my kids will say something that parents usually say to kids: She's so sweet when she's sleeping!

The poem begins at the point when the poet faces two paths with different directions in a forest. The poet faces the dilemma because there are two paths, and he has to choose one to walk on. After considering the two ways, he decides to start walking on the course that he considers right for him.

He additionally realizes that there are not any apparent differences between the two paths. But to justify his choice he says that I choose to walk on this path because fewer people have traveled on it. However, when he proceeds, he finds that this path is also walked over by many people. He says that one that morning, I had the freedom to choose any of the ways. 

He walked on one road and spared the other for the future, knowing that the path he has chosen will lead to another path. And that he will not be able to revert his decision. Introduction to the poem

This poem was written by Rudyard Kipling. He was an English poet and wrote many poems. Like his other poems, The Way Through the Woods also carries powerful lessons for us. 

The poem primarily talks about the relationship between human beings and Nature. It was Nature that first started to influence living beings on the face of Earth. 

However, after humans achieved a certain level of intellect, they also started altering Nature for their own motives. 

For example, the rapid deforestation rate across the globe shows how we are bringing changes in the environment for our needs. 

Kipling paints the same conflict between man and nature in this poem. Through an example of a road which is vanished in the woods after people abandoned it, he shows the gradual re-growth of Nature, thereby removing all remains of the road. Structurally, the poem has two stanzas constituted by twenty-five verses.

Summary of the poem

The poet starts the poem by telling the reader that he is talking about a road. A road which was closed seventy years ago for some reason. 

The harshness of weather and heaviness of rains have so far vanished all the traces of the road. And on the spot, there is no sign that once a road was there. The re-growth of Nature has covered it with coppice, heath, and anemones. 

Only the keeper of the territory knows that there was a road that is no longer visible to most of the people. Moreover, he says that it is the place where otter (a mammal) is not afraid of humans because it has seen only a few of them. 

If anybody visits the woods in a summer evening, he will only hear silence. A silence that can only be replaced by the galloping of a horse that walks through the misty atmosphere of the place. 

Only that rider could identify the road as being covered by the greenery. In the last two verses, the poet says that it was the road that was lost in the woods. And the woods show no sign of its previous existence.

1. The Power of Nature

The conflict between the power of man and the power of Nature is depicted in this poem. His confidence in himself has made man think that he can overcome Nature and reduce its power. 

Kipling, however, denies this view that Nature can be defeated. Nature has supreme power. As shown in the poem, Nature takes very little time to re-grow at the places it owns. 

Although man had made a road in the woods to fulfill his needs of moving across, it did not last forever. The road had to be closed seventy years ago. 

Once it was abandoned by man, Nature starts gaining the territory it once had. Therefore, the triumph of Nature over man is the foremost theme in this poem.

2. Indifference of Nature

Nature is very indifferent to our desires, plans, and motives. It is to say that natural laws are not constrained by the will of man. 

Nature has its own plans. And it faces no obstacle in executing all of them. The very indifference of Nature to the developments we have so far made is shown in this poem. 

Hundreds of people would have labored to construct the road. Later on, they had to close it. However, Nature had nothing to do with the time invested and efforts done by those many laborers. 

In its very essence, Nature is expansive. It can deepen its roots anywhere. So does happen in this poem.

3. The decay of everything

Another important theme in this poem is decay. The imagery created by Kipling in this poem tells us as to how things get to end and their remains vanish. 

Nature has the power to drive anything to nothingness no matter how much time it had taken to be. Just seventy years after the road was abandoned, it started to exist no more because Nature had already covered it with grass and plants. 

Not even the road itself, there is also no trace that it had once existed. Only the keeper of the area knows that there was once a road here which has now faded. In this way, the theme of decay is infused in the poem.

1. We cannot defeat Nature 

Nature is unconquerable. Even our hardest efforts cannot make it kneel down before our will and plans. We cannot fully control the happenings of Nature.

2. We should not harm Nature

Another lesson which we get from this poem is that Nature should not be harmed in any way. For the fulfillment of our material needs, we often start destroying nature. For example, to expand the area for living deforestation is done which results in the lack of forests. 

However, this is not even good for us. We should not sacrifice everlasting benefits for temporary gains. Therefore, harm to Nature must be avoided.

3. We should protect Nature

Instead of conflicting with it, we should strive to protect Nature, since it provides us relief through its beauty. There is an urgent need for cherishing the natural environment. 

In order to not fall prey to its indifference, it is necessary to embrace Nature as it is. The only way to please it is to protect it. It is good for us and even for it.

4. We should connect emotionally to Nature

The technological developments of modern-day have emptied our hearts of the will to explore Nature. Man's emotional connection to Nature is significantly reduced by massive industrialization and mechanization of human society. 

Therefore, it is needed that we should invest our emotions in getting the joy of Nature and its beauty.

The poem shows the scene of Casabianca. The boy was commanding a warship on the orders of his father. When the war was ongoing, the warship got caught by fire. 

In those moments of misery, Casabianca was all alone, he had nobody with him. He was dedicated to his job and did not stop fulfilling his responsibility despite the terrible circumstances. Unknown of his father's death in the fire, he kept calling him for further commands. 

However, no reply came to him. He, eventually, himself died on the ship. He stands alone on the ship when it was burning. Everybody else is gone. He is struck inside and is seeing the fire. 

Casabianca is dealing with circumstances bravely. Now the flames are increasing, but Casabianca has to get command from his father to make any decision. 

Unknown he is of the death of his father, for he lays dead under. He is thinking to leave the ship but with the approval of his father. He calls his father again and again and gets no reply from his dead father. 

Still, he does not know that his father is no more alive. The flames are rising but he is still optimistic that he would hear the voice of his father. 

The scorching heat now then starts to harm his body. He keeps asking his father and gets no reply. In the following moments, he gets caught by fire and eventually dies. 

The poet regrets that a faithful heart is no more. The poem is all about obedience, responsibility, loyalty, and honor. It contains ten stanzas, four verses in each.

This is a poem with deep meaning. The poet has narrated the story of a mother sparrow who has one grain to be fed to ten young baby birds. The poet says that the mother sparrow is holding a small grain of cereal in her beak. She has come to the nest to feed her ten small young ones. 

The baby birds are very small and they have no feathers. When they open their beaks for food, the only beaks are visible. The mother has to feed these ten young ones with that small grain.

The mother sparrow is confused about which one she should feed first. All the young ones have joined their beaks wide open. The poet says that humans have learned to break the atom. They have prepared for their own destruction. The poet says that the real task is to break the grain. 

Splitting the grain means to set life on foot. The poet calls the so-called scientific progress of no use if a small grain cannot be split. Humanity lies in dividing and sharing, not in dividing and taking.

There is a time to born and also a time to die. The time for happiness and sorrows is fixed. There is a time to sow and a time to reap.

The time keeps changing and the things and happenings also change and reverse. We all are bound to float on a ship of the time.
